Some users here have reported that when they open HTML email containing images that the images just appear as red boxes containing a small x. I found the solution to this problem on the Notes forums.

The issue seems to be that web navigator database (perweb.nsf) doesn’t exist. To fix this issue (I tested it on a mac) do the following.

  1. Edit your current location (popup menu at bottom right)
  2. Goto the Internet Browser tab
  3. Select Notes as the internet browser
  4. Set retrieve/open pages to “from Notes workstation”
  5. Save the location document (the thing you are editing)
  6. Open an email that contains images. They should now appear.
  7. Try a couple of emails if it doesn’t work first time
  8. Once you have working images you can go back and set your internet browser to firefox or whatever you use.

    Well done for finding out, but it does highlight some shody coding. Why not just create the database on installation?

    Thanks for posting this information, although the problem source is that the location document lacks mandatory browser settings, the perweb.nsf did exist on my installation of 7.0.2 and is not causing the problem.

    I’ve been using the beta, now gold code since the released and didn’t run into that problem. I have however run into this issue many times before with different versions of Notes. You would think that they would have this one figured out by now. Frankly, the whole perweb.nsf is so R5 if you ask me.. :)

    Hi, This fix didn’t work for me, I going to have to copy someones perweb.nsf file into the data folder, just as a matter of interest have you noticed any pattern as to when it starts to happen, I have noticed that when I give a user an upgraded pc (I only ever copy names.nsf and pernames.nsf with the ID file) I get the red sqaures problem on the new PC with old mails, but it still works on the old PC?

    Try;
    Close Notes,
    delete perweb.nsf
    restart Notes (new perweb.nsf created when you view HTML message)

    This works for me.

    It’s magic. Thanks for the info. I looked all over for it and knew the setting was in location preferences, but couldn’t find it.
